About Kelly

at katz's final

Hi, I’m Kelly. I try my damnedest everyday to wash away the ‘dust of everyday life’ from my soul. My soaps of choice are the visual arts.

Here, at Cathartery, I write about art and experiences that not only cleanse,  inspire, and lift me up, but also make me think or see in a new way. There is no singular genre or medium.

Cathartery…what does that mean? The term is a mash up of the words ‘cathartic’ and ‘artery’, a cleansing emotional release and a conduit essential for life. Both words contain art at the core. Ergo the tagline–art: it’s emotional, it’s essential, and it matters.

For the most part, I’m self-taught with the exception of a few classes from individual artists and/or local art leagues. I make time almost every day for art–either broadening my knowledge base or improving my skill. I am choosing to honor myself by feeding my soul in this way.

Aside from the arts, I also engage in spiritual journaling, and have kept that practice for most of my adult life. I have taught and tutored writing to both high school and undergraduate students. Writing blog posts  is a completely different form of writing. Informal yet informative, tightly focused with great clarity, and with a consistent, individual voice and style. More Hemingway, less Shakespeare.

I started Cathartery for two reasons. First, to have another outlet for my interest in the arts and to share what I learn, and second, to hone my skills as a writer in this genre. The learning curve is steep, but so far, I am enjoying the ride.
